We live in a province that spends many months in a winter-y environment. At The Trail Shop, we're big believers that all seasons are GREAT seasons, and that we are able to get outside and enjoy adventures all throughout the year!
We asked our friends at A for Adventure if they had any recommendations for the best places in Nova Scotia to go for winter adventures, and here's what Jan LaPierre had to say:
Where’s winter in Nova Scotia??? Without hesitation I always reply “Cape Breton.” I find it funny sometimes that people put in massive efforts (and time) traveling to places outside our province in search of their winter fix, when all along it was waiting for them just north of our mainland.
With more reliable cold temperatures and WAY more snow, Cape Breton is home to some of the best winter adventure opportunities anywhere in Atlantic Canada. People are starting to take notice too, so you might want to get up there soon before all the crowds start to show once the world realizes that Cape Breton is open for business in winter!
Here are 5 excellent adventures that will make you want winter to last all year!
1. Cross country ski the Celtic Shores trail
Stretching from the Canso causeway to the scenic town of Inverness, this former rail-line is now a world class trail system that offers gorgeous views of the highlands and the ocean!
2. Snowshoe Franey Mountain
A classic hike in the summer months, Franey offers up even more beauty in the wintertime for the adventurous traveller. The view from the top is worth every step!
3. Ice fish on Bra D'or Lake
I’ve not spent much time ice fishing, but on a recent trip to the Bra D’or I watched in disbelief as these ice-anglers pulled in some huge rainbow trout. It definitely convinced me to drop a line the next time I’m passing through!
4. Ski Cape Smokey
Big things are in store for Smokey. A recent purchase of the resort is leading to much needed upgrades. Plans are laid out for a new gondola, brewery/clubhouse, and further expansion of trails. The future is bright for the hill and you might want to get there soon before the secret is out on what will be one of the finest ski resorts in the entire region.
5. North Highland Nordic
This community run trail system is a hidden gem. Miles of groomed trails that give stunning views of the Aspy range makes it a must for anyone looking to strap on some cross-country skis, skate skis or snow shoes. Rentals are available!
